I CAN'T BREATHE
The concepts of #blacklivesmatters was totally new to me, until the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
I don't read news!
Ever since I was young, I have considered news to be too busy with providing bad news. It always seemed to me that the focus was mostly on what was wrong with the world, and too little attention was given to the ones that bring light into the darkness.
I remember it felt comforting to me when Aurora said she felt the same way. That news often made her feel down. I wasn't alone in these emotions...
But, as I have come to realize, news has its place in the world. For example: The concepts of #blacklivesmatters was totally new to me, until the murder of George Floyd in 2020. This was truly an eye-opening incident, making me more aware of what it means to be a privileged white man - and with what terrible treatment US police officers gave darker skinned people.
In this case, although the news was heart-wrenching and saddening, the news also led to actions like demonstrations and donations to causes who works against such behavior. In this case, the bad news was accompanied with voices of hope, fighting power and light. One such voice was Auroras...
Three years ago
George Floyd died on May 25, 2020 after the police officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee against the black man's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds during an arrest. Floyd said several times that he could not breathe, but still the policeman did nothing to lift his knee and without the other police officers intervening. The incident was filmed and spread on social media, after which large demonstrations broke out against racism and police violence both in the United States and in other parts of the world.
An appeals court in Minneapolis has upheld the sentence against the former police officer Derek Chauvin, who has been sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd.
As a reaction. As a way to cope. As a way to give aid and to show her support for the cause against racism and discrimination, Aurora joined forces with artists like Hkeem and Sondre Lerche and held a 80 minutes and 46 seconds long live stream concert. The concert was called "I Can't Breathe" - as was the final words of George Floyd, may we always remember his name. The concert has been made available on YouTube.
I urge you especially to check out the opening.
This rendition of "Running with the wolves" is awesome.
I can't breathe (Interview)
Aurora spoke shortly to a journalist before the concert "I Can't Breathe".
With English subtitles.
Demonstration against police violence
There was a pandemic crisis all over the world. Still Aurora and lots of people showed up to raise their voice against racism an police violence. Look what she wrote inside the palms of her hands 😍
Final words
OK - I think it's safe to say that newspapers isn't all bad. There is a lot of bad things happening in the world, true, but there is also a lot of good things going on. Besides - making us aware of what's going on also gives us the opportunity to take actions to do better in the future. And - if it wasn't for all the active journalist we wouldn't be able to dig out all these wonderful stories of Auroras journey to fame.
Feel free to share anything I have written here. Feel free to forward the mail to anyone you know. There's no secrets here. I hope you find the time to write me some words about yourself and your interest in Aurora or anything you like. I am still in learning mode here, so all of your feedback is also welcome.
Have a day 💚
